Lorrie tell us a bit about yourself, please
Hi! I’m Lorrie Schilke. I would like to share a little about myself and my business, Keeping Good Company. I am a wife, and a mother of 4 grown children and 2 dogs. My husband and I have been in the Columbia, MO area for 30 years. Our kids grew up here. We have always been very involved and connected to our church and the community. I have been a Registered Nurse since 1983. I am the owner of Keeping Good Company Senior Care at Home, LLC.
Why did you decide to open an In-home care agency in Columbia, Missouri?
After my stepfather passed away in 2011, my mother came to live with us. She was in a wheelchair and could not totally care for herself. Through caring for my mother in our home, I learned firsthand what was involved with being a Caregiver for a loved one. It was a very stressful time, but I was glad to do it and wouldn’t change a thing. As mom began having more health issues, more people needed to be involved in her care. She didn’t trust others, and it put more burden on me to follow up to be sure things were being done as she wanted.
Finally, after a couple of trusted people became involved in my mother’s care, she became more comfortable with outside help. This took a little of the burden off my shoulders. It allowed me to feel more like her daughter again, rather than being so busy as her Caregiver all the time. This was truly a blessing to both of us.
After my mother passed away, I realized how important those trusted people had been to us. I decided to find good people like them and match them up with seniors who need some help in their homes.
This is how my business began. I decided I was going to find good, caring, trustworthy people and match them up with seniors who need some assistance in their homes, wherever their homes may be. I literally began the business out of my home. Keeping Good Company is beginning its 10th year. We are not a franchise. We are an independent company. We hire and train our exceptional Caregivers. We provide non-medical assistance in the home to help seniors maintain their independence as much as possible.
